Changelog and updating#
How template updates reach your project without losing your work, and what changed in each version.
How updates work#
An update from the Asset Store re-imports the template's own files in Assets/NextAppLabs/IdleRpg/ (and the few
files it ships in Assets/Plugins, Assets/Settings, Assets/StreamingAssets and Assets/TextMesh Pro). Unity
matches files by their hidden id, so a template file you edited is replaced by the new version.
That is why Make it yours (Hub > Home, step 1) copies your game into Assets/<Company>/<Game>/:
| Lives in your folder (never touched by an update) | Lives in the template's folder (replaced by an update) |
|---|---|
Scenes/Game.unity (the copy in Build Settings) | the code: Features/, Framework/, Services/, Editor/ |
Content/: every hero, enemy, item, biome, product, text table, GameConfig, FeatureSet, LegalInfo | Art/, Audio/, Prefabs/ |
Settings/: theme, effects, sounds table, fake services, the release service profile | the template's original Content/, Settings/ and Scenes/ |
Scripts/, Art/, Features/ (New Feature), anything you add | Documentation/, AI/, Deploy/, Legal/ |
The Hub, the art importers and Validate Content work on your folder, so everything you did through them is safe.
What an update may overwrite#
- Template code you changed (a fix of your own in
Features/Shop/…, a sixth tab in the bar). Keep a list of such edits, and re-apply them after the update. Better: put your code in your folder and useGameEvents(Code architecture). - Pictures, sounds and prefabs you edited in place in
Art/,Audio/,Prefabs/. Copy them into your folder before editing (Reskin). - The server files in
Deploy/(IdleServer.ccm,Idle.rc, boards): after an update, Export Live Config again and deploy what the changelog says changed. - Anything you edited in the template's original
Content/after Make it yours: the game no longer uses it anyway.
Each version below lists its Files changed, so you can see what an update replaces before you import it.
Before you update#
- Commit your project to version control, or copy the whole project folder. Always.
- Read the version's entry below (or on the Asset Store page): Files changed and What to do.
- Close Play mode. Import the update from Window > Package Manager > My Assets; import everything.
After you update#
- Wait for the compile; the Console should show no red lines.
- Bring in what the update added to your copy (new text keys, UI kit pictures, feature rows). It only adds and
never changes what you have. From a script or your AI assistant:
TemplateApi.Game.SyncPreview()lists it,TemplateApi.Game.Sync()adds it (one undo step). Without that step, a new screen may show#key#texts. - New heroes, biomes or products from the update are not copied into your game by themselves: duplicate them from the
template's
Content/into yours if you want them (Hub > Content). - Tools > Idle RPG > Validate Content, then Hub > Release > Check for Android / iOS, then press Play.
- Re-apply your own edits to template files, if any.
